So once again, going off one of the discussions we had in our last class, I though I’d share my thoughts on some of my most memorable video game characters from past years. They may not necessarily be my favourites, but just some that stand out when I think about what makes a good character.
It may just be from the sheer amount of time I spent playing this game, but despite what many, many people may think, I actually liked CJ from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. I think a big reason why he was so disliked was solely because of his race, but in my opinion that’s a really shallow sense of judgement. He was a great character and had an interesting story to tell. You start the game off with the death of CJ’s mother, and soon after that you find yourself cleaning up the streets of San Andreas and bringing your Grove Street gang back to the top. Even though much of the game involves you massacring people all over the city, CJ’s character is a lot less violent then even some of the other Grand Theft Auto characters. He was honorable and tough, and he stuck up for his family and friends. Overall, a great under appreciated character.
Anyone who knows me well enough knows that I love the Uncharted series. A big reason for this is due in large part to the main character, Nathan Drake. While many other games usually make their main characters out to be some kind of superhuman, I very much get the sense while playing Uncharted that Drake is just an average guy trying to do the right thing, but often getting himself caught up in places he shouldn’t be. Because of this, it’s very easy to get attached and feel emotion while playing this character. When Drake gets hurt, I get hurt. When he loses, I lose. I particularly loved the way Naughty Dog made Uncharted 3 to be a game much more focused on Drake and Sully and their relationship. It was great being able to play through Drake’s past and watch his peers question his motives for doing what he was doing. He’s lighthearted and funny, and definitely one of my most memorable characters.
With all that he can do and everything that he says, it hard not to like Kratos. He’s the definition of badassery and his abilities rival that of God’s. He may be a little mean, but not even that is ruining this character. Some people may even plot Kratos as the antagonist in the God of War series. His main goal is killing Zeus, and along his path he runs into serveral other Gods and fights them all to the death, with some ending it brutal bloodbaths. He’s just about the toughest character ever to be created. I doesn’t matter if your 2 ft. or 50,000 ft. tall; stand in his way and die. He’s cruel, heartless, and his only motive is vengeance. Some may question what there is to like about him. The only thing I would say to that is: HE’S THE GOD OF WAR DAMMIT!
So there you have it, 3 characters that undoubtedly stand out for me. Each of them have distinctly different personalities and storylines. I can name many more, but these are just 3 that initially stand out in the vast sea of great characters. I think all developers should really take the time and effort to craft an enjoyable and memorable character in their games, because a good character can be the foundation of a great game.
